Today, Roland Mouret celebrates a decade of his acclaimed Galaxy dress – a dress that made fashion history, worn and adored by so many. In the spirit of celebrating 10 years, Mouret transposes his Spring Summer 2016 collection to 1971, when he himself was just 10 years old. A time of pivotal global change, where a generation witnessed an increase in political awareness, economic upheaval, but also the political and economical liberty of women, in which their role in society was vastly altered with growing feminism across the world. Mouret draws inspiration from ‘Aujourd’hui Madame’ – an influential French television programme from the early 70s aimed at women, the first of its kind in France – shaping his first visions of fashion. The shift from haute couture to prêt–à–porter saw fashion used as an expression of identity and freedom.
Mouret brings the romance of the 70s to midi-length hemlines and bias cut skirts with palm leaf fil coupé, paisley jacquard, and puckered floral cottons in vibrant hues of saffron yellow, antique rose, tomato red, and peppermint green. Retro off the shoulder Bardot tops mixed with tiered ruffled skirts inject effortless glamour into the collection, while lingerie style trims used as straps and ties on halter necklines emphasise the liberal sensuality of the era. Mouret introduces ripple plissé to cotton silk separates and lightweight knit dresses. Adding to the relaxed attitude of the season are criss-cross tops paired with pleated skirts and laser cut floral motifs, as well as ankle-grazing wide leg trousers embellished with abstract rose embroidery.
Pearl and pink quartz drop earrings mixed with industrial hardware by Marie Beltrami are hand selected by Mouret. Rich, suede shoes are embossed with floral designs found throughout the collection, and Mouret’s signature folds enhance soft leather bucket bags.
Combining the timelessness of the past with the contemporary style of the future, Roland Mouret introduces a capsule collection of five limited edition pieces to celebrate 10 years of the Galaxy dress. Available to buy on Mouret’s digital flagship immediately after the show, the collection will subsequently launch tomorrow in six cities worldwide with five exclusive partners. The Galaxy top, skirt, jacket and jumpsuit will sit alongside the Galaxy dress, creating the all-encompassing wardrobe for the Roland Mouret woman. The collection will be available in core colours of white and navy, with each partner championing a shade unique to them taken from the Roland Mouret Spring Summer 2016 collection.
